GRAMMAR,  GRAMMAR, GRAMMAR
We've spent most of the last three weeks working on grammar. Here's a peek at what we've been learning about, encourage your child to use some of these new skills in their spelling sentences.
  • capitalization & punctuation - Every sentence starts with a capital letter and ends with a stop sign.
  • nouns
    • common & proper (don't forget your capital)
    • singular & plural (this will start next week)
  • subject & predicate
    • The subject of a sentence is the person, place or thing the whole sentence is about. We underline it when we mark sentences. For example... Mrs. Wilson listens.
    • The predicate is the action of the subject. For example... Mrs. Costa speaks.
    • Use commas to separate subjects or predicates in a series. For example... Sally, Ben, and Paul run, jump, and play at recess.
  • compound sentences (this will be in a few weeks)
    • using the right conjunction to combine two related sentences which makes a more detailed second grade sentence. Ask your child what "FANBOYS" means if they come to school and tell me they talked about it with you they'll earn something special. For example... Jill ran across the field, but then she tripped and fell.
