SECOND TRIMESTER

Our new science kit this trimester is called Solids and Liquids. In the first series of investigations we learned about the properties of solids objects and the materials they are made from. Students built tall and stable towers from a set of materials, and then had the opportunity to turn those towers into bridges. The next set of investigations looked solely at liquids. Students learned some new vocabulary such as transparent, viscous, bubbly, and foamy.  In one part of that investigation we went outside to collect puddle water and observe which properties it might have.
Below you can see the children participating in several of these science investigations.

Bridges

Students had to draw their bridge and label the materials they used.

Testing out how stable this bridge is by adding a little weight from the paint bottles.

FIRST TRIMESTER

Our science kit this trimester is called Pebbles, Sand, and Silt. In September students were introduced to three rocks; Basalt, Scoria, and Tuff. We investigated the properties of those rocks and then watched as we placed them in water to see if we noticed anything different. We also learned that these rocks all come from volcanoes.
Then we began to investigate river rocks. We compared them, and used their properties to tell how they were the same. Students used the words that told about the properties of the rocks to describe them. One day we went outside to investigate schoolyard rocks, and students brought them in to learn more. Then students sorted a rock mixture using screens. Students discovered there were different sizes of pebbles, and gravel in the mixture and that there was also sand in the mixture. We are now learning about silt which is smaller than sand.
